Each pillar is a pair of a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支). The Day Pillar's Heavenly Stem — the top character of the third pillar — is called the Day Master.
In traditional method, the Day Master is treated as "I." It anchors the whole chart: every other character is read in relation to it, through the language of the Five Elements and a framework called the Ten Gods.

📌 Good news: you only need your birth date to find the Day Master itself — the Day Pillar comes from the date. Birth time enriches the whole chart (Hour Pillar, Ten Gods) but is not required for the core element.
