A red moon hangs in the daylight sky. The square is chaos; Lane tries to slip through, but an iron grip hauls him up — until Iris, a red-haired elven field surgeon, cuts through the crowd and pulls him out from under a conscription order.
The red moon hangs in the daytime sky; the square is in uproar. Lane edges along the crowd, trying to slip away, when a hand like an iron vice grips his arm. "Halt! You blind? There's a conscription order posted," a grizzled sergeant barks. Lane flashes a grin: "C'mon, sir. This scrawny body of mine'd be nothing but witch bait."
"Leave him be. He's my medicine runner." The crowd parts. Iris walks through the square — red hair in a high ponytail, amber eyes, a cinched grey-white surcoat, pointed ears hidden among her locks. The ruffians let go of him. She faces the sergeant: "You drag him off, and your wounded'll be crawling through the mud to pick their own herbs."
The crowd disperses. Lane exhales and bows: "You just saved my skin. How 'bout I repay you with myself?" Iris sizes him up: "You? Offering yourself up as payment?" After the back-and-forth she snorts: "Then keep yourself as payment. At least the face is easy on the eyes." She hands him a medicine pouch. Lane takes it — tucking the precious salve to the bottom, flipping the cheap wound-dressing to the top.
"What're you up to?" Iris raises an eyebrow. "Good stuff stays hidden. Saved for when it matters." She studies him a moment, then reaches out, fingertips against the pulse inside his wrist: "Pulse races. Temperature runs high. Pupils blow wide in the dark. You're not human either." Lane freezes: "...How'd you know that?" She draws her hand back, a hint of a smile: "Field surgeon. I read people by their eyes."
