Kai goes through every record and finds one precedent from a thousand years past — the first werewolf and the first elf, who sealed the Abyss together and became stars.
Behind the apothecary, Lane sits on an old stool, legs transparent below the knee — he can see the stool's legs through them. Kai pages through an old tome: "There's only been one union of werewolf and elf in all history." "When was that?" "A thousand years past. The first werewolf and the first elf. They stood together and sealed the Abyss. But their end — the text says: 'When both as one, they become stars. One watches the sky, one watches the earth.'"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Kai closes the book: "It means they became the moon and the earth. The werewolf became the moon. The elf became the earth. Always together… but never touching." Iris grips Lane's hand: "I don't wanna be the earth." Lane shakes his head too: "Don't wanna be the moon either. Rather be a half-transparent thief."
Kai turns the page and his face changes: "But there's another way. If a werewolf and an elf enter the red moon together, on the night of the full moon, and drive the sword through the moon's heart… they can swap souls. Trade places with all the souls trapped inside. Including the half of you that's stuck there." Lane asks: "What's the price?" Kai meets his eyes: "The price — their souls stay in the red moon. Forever. Both of them."
