Vince wove his soul into the red moon — it is his new mirror. The sword cannot kill him; Lane can. Werewolf blood devours mage souls.
The violet moon is rising, larger and closer than any red moon before. "So Vince is living in the moon now?" Iris nods: "Yeah. He wove his soul into the red moon. Doesn't need glass anymore. He is the mirror." Lane asks how they fight him. She meets his eyes: "We go into the moon. With the sword. The sword cuts through mirrors — the moon is just another mirror."
"Then what?" "Then we find Vince. And we kill him." Lane asks whether the sword can kill him — "The sword can't. But you can." She holds his gaze: "You're a werewolf. He's a sorcerer. Werewolf blood devours mage souls." Lane gets it: "So I bite him." Iris smiles: "Yeah. You finally get to be the wolf."
They rise. Lane tucks the sword at his back; Iris straps the mirror on hers. Before they go, he asks the question he's been afraid to ask: "If I bite him… can I turn back?" She looks at him: "I don't know. But whatever you become, I'll bring you back." "Why?" "Because you owe me three hundred and three coppers. Haven't paid up yet." Lane grins: "Then let's go. Collect the debt."
