Outside the city, past midnight. The forest suddenly "breathes" — a blue wind pours from the treeline, carrying shards of blue crystal. Where the light touches a tent, it collapses like paper. The crystal storm sweeps the camp; soldiers fall like cut wheat.
雷恩蜷在帐篷角落。狼人血脉在疯狂预警。怀里的剑发烫，一圈极淡的幽光泛开，把他包住。死一样的安静。
Lane curls in a corner of his tent. His werewolf blood screams a warning. The sword at his chest burns; a faint ring of pale light blooms and wraps around him. Silence, dead and absolute.
黎明。雷恩睁开眼，满地的尸体，只有他一个人站着。他拉开衣襟——剑正发着幽蓝的光。他握住剑柄，剑身发出最后一声瓮响，然后动了，像一条苏醒的蛇：剑身扭动、化形，一条手臂粗的幽蓝蛇从剑柄窜出，暗红色的蛇眼直直盯着他。「这……可真是不可思议了。」蛇朝他扑来，雷恩眼前一黑，吓晕过去。
Dawn. Lane opens his eyes to a field of the dead — only he stands. He pulls open his coat: the sword glows faint blue. He grips the hilt; the blade gives one last dull hum, and then it moves, like a serpent waking: the steel twists and reforms, a blue serpent thick as an arm lunges from the hilt, dark red eyes fixed on him. "…This… this is impossible." The serpent strikes. Lane's vision goes black as he faints.
