His pupils shrink to pins; faint blue veins creep across the whites. He rises to his feet.

Iris steps back, hand on her scalpel: "Lane?" He doesn't answer. He turns toward the door: "The forest... it's calling. It wants me in the forest." He throws the door open — beyond, in the dusk, a blood-red moon is rising.
