"Did the Abyss take her?" Kai's fists tighten. "No. She's trapped in the seal. With your werewolf. She's part of it." He tells her how it works: werewolves guard the lock, elves seal the gate — and there is a third piece, humans, the sacrifice that anchors the seal, giving their lives to hold it fast. "My sister was that sacrifice."

Iris studies him. "So you're here to get her back." Kai meets her eyes: "Yeah. You want your man back. I want my sister. We team up." She is silent a long moment. Then she offers her hand. "Tell me where the third key is." Kai takes it: "Beneath the throne. Olsen's dead, but the seal's still there. Under it, there's a key. That key unlocks every mirror."

They rise. Iris takes up the sword; its blood-red veins flicker. "Then we have to go back." Kai nods. "Yeah. Back to where it all started."
